The Mindbody Connection: The Psyche and the Heart

This is a presentation for local members of WomenHeart, a national coalition for women with heart disease. Lecture attendees will develop an understanding of mindbody, or psychosomatic disorders, particularly as related to the connection between the psyche and the heart. Symptoms of two of the most common psychological disorders, depression and anxiety, will be discussed.

Postpartum Psychiatric Disorders

Participants in this seminar will develop an understanding of the various postpartum psychiatric disorders that affect up to 20% of new moms. This will include an overview of motherhood myths and various risk factors that may contribute to the development of postpartum psychiatric disorders. Participants will become familiar with various screening and treatment options for these disorders, as well as resources for helping this population beyond the individual practitioner’s office.

The Military Patient: Individual and Family Interventions

Participants in this seminar will develop an understanding of the issues relevant to former and current military service members and their families, as well as resources in the treatment of those issues. This will include an overview of PTSD, including information on etiology and prevalence, diagnostic criteria, differential diagnostic considerations and best practices in the treatment of the disorder. The presentation will incorporate information on common myths and concerns associated with mental health in a military population, as well as a discussion of various deployment issues. It will also encompass resources for helping this population beyond the individual practitioner’s office.
